Leave It Out

You’re out and about and something catches your attention.  It appeals to you.  You examine it through the viewfinder of your camera.  “There’s a picture,” you think to yourself.  But is it?  Is what’s in your viewfinder really a picture, or are you only seeing what caught your eye in the first place?  What you might be exclusively looking at is what you originally saw.  There’s a whole bunch of other stuff there too which we subliminally ignore because we’re too focussed on the key element.  Then you print the picture, and that’s when the all too familiar underwhelming feeling creeps up on you.  What this tells us is that the image is best made up of what should be left in, and more importantly, what should be left out.
