There were more photographs taken in the last year than all the pictures ever taken up until then. That’s right … since photography was invented nearly 200 years ago! All of them. All added together. Okay, I’ll stop repeating myself now. The thing about nearly all of these photographs is that the subject was uppermost in the mind of the person taking the picture. Quite rightly. Well, kind of. This is one reason why the subject is so often lost in the picture. What isn’t thought about nearly so much is where the subject is in relation to its background and everything else around it. The space the subject lives in is just as important as the subject itself. Equally … not nearly. And then there’s the shape of the picture. That’s a space too. So, the next time you’re taking a picture of something, have a quick squint around the rest of the frame. It’s all part of the picture.
